The Afghan villagers of Kandahar province reported seeing more than one shooter. President Hamid Karzai initially referred to only one shooter but later changed his mind, citing a young boy’s eye-witness testimony. If the parliamentary probe has any credibility, then the current White House story, which has been little contested in mainstream media, is highly questionable. The man being charged with murdering these villagers is 38-year-old Staff Sargent Robert Bales, who described as someone with a troubled past and possible mental instability. Afghanis do not believe the victims will have a fair trial since the US is planning to try him in American courts, rather than handing him over to Afghanistan authorities.
The continued aftermath of the massacre will only continue to strain already troubled American-Afghanistan relations and we may see President Obama looking for a quick exit strategy before the upcoming Presidential election.
